When living abroad, you can still use TEK's wide range of membership services. If you work in the Nordic countries or Australia, you can utilise the benefits of free guest membership.

Please note that Finnish unemployment security may not always be valid abroad. Please remember to check your situation regarding unemployment security separately with the Unemployment fund for highly educated KOKO.

Please also check the validity of your professional liability and legal expenses insurance with our lawyers. For more information on the validity of possible self-funded group insurances, please contact your insurance company.

Guest membership in the Nordic countries and Australia

If you move to another Nordic country or Australia, you can apply for guest membership of local engineering organisations. Guest membership is available for full members of TEK who work in the host country and meet the local organisation’s requirements for membership.

TEK has guest membership agreements with the following engineering organisations:

Australia: Professionals Australia
Iceland: VFI
Norway: Tekna
Sweden: Engineers of Sweden
Denmark: IDA

As a guest member, you generally have the same rights to services as other members of the organisation. However, membership doesn’t automatically cover legal proceedings in the event of an employment dispute or unemployment insurance. The best way to find out more about services covered by guest membership and possible restrictions is directly from the organisations.

In Sweden and Denmark, you can choose to join a separate unemployment fund, in which case you will be charged a separate fee. Please contact the unemployment fund if you have any questions regarding unemployment security before moving abroad.

Guest membership is valid for the year of migration and two subsequent calendar years, provided that TEK membership or employment in the host country does not end before then.

To apply for guest membership, please contact us via OmaTEK and we’ll send you an application form. After completing the form, return it to TEK and we’ll forward it to the right organisation in the host country.
