Top 3 local events:
1. Savo-Karjala Excursion
The Savo-Karjala Excursion is one of ISYY's best-known and most popular May Day traditions, going back to 1990. Organised every year on 29 April, the excursion features students being driven around the region of Savo-Karelia and its licensed premises.
2. May Day Eve festivities
The ancient and mystical May Day traditions of Kuopio are a source of wonder to outsiders. One of these traditions is the Dipping of the Professor, or “Proffan uitto” in Finnish, where a distinguished professor selected by the students is dipped in a pool surrounding the Velj’mies statue in the marketplace of Kuopio. Local student associations and the Student Union organise their own celebrations on May Day Eve, and Teekkari traditions, such as Teekkari Dipping, were added to these in 2024.
3. Orientation Weeks (Fuksiviikot)
The Orientation Weeks kick off in the beginning of September with events organised for first-year students (and like-minded people) throughout September. Activities are organised for new students in early autumn where they are introduced to each other and the student culture in Kuopio.
Teekkaris in Kuopio
Teekkari culture got off to a great start in Kuopio when Kvantti was founded and education in technical physics began in 2023. Kuopio has decades of May Day traditions, and local associations, clubs and the Student Union organise a number of cross-disciplinary May Day events. And in Kuopio, May Day celebrations do not end when May Day ends!
The Savo-Karelian Teekkari cap (Finnish tassel cap) was worn for the very first time on May Day 2024. The cap has seven corners and the inner lining colors are red, black and yellow. The Teekkaris of our university can be recognised by the cockade that resembles the letter K.
The colours of the Student Union Ribbon are red, yellow and black. The ribbon may be worn by all current and former members of ISYY.
