What are our Guilds?

Check out a list of all guilds here.

What are some of our main events?

  1. Wappu
    • When? Towards the end of April and start of May
    • Who for? For everyone with a Wappu mindset
    • What happens? In Oulu, the Teekkari Wappu usually begins around 1-2 weeks before Wappu Day, and is extremely eventful throughout, with a range of activities every day. Events vary from BBQ happenings to Wappu Sitsit parties and Wappu Adventures, to many more. For Fuksi it of course includes their baptism on Waatto (Wappu Eve), and their capping early on the morning of Wappu Day. On the evening of Wappu Day, freshman caps are cremated at Teekkaritalo.
The speciality of Oulu’s Teekkari Wappu is the Wesibussi, or Line 69, which can be ridden around Oulu without the need to interrupt the party. The bus also has its tradition as a Tempaus (see the Teekkari ABC for more details), with its revenue donated to charity in full.
    • Who organises? OTY, guilds and other student associations
    • What is best? Togetherness, and a happy Wappu atmosphere!
  2. Laskiainen (Shrove Tuesday)
    • When? Shrove Tuesday
    • Who for? Anyone wanting to enjoy a good Spring atmosphere and those seeking a wild downhill adventure!
    • What happens? Laskiainen gathers students together to enjoy downhill Spring sledding, and has been organised by the Oulu Guild of Mechanical Engineers for over 50 years. The day begins with the raising of money for charity in the city centre via the selling of donated items, before moving onto the sledding competition itself. The competition contains three series. In the General and Isokenkäinen series, teams of three go down and run back up together on standard sledding equipment, while in the Modified series, teams bring their most up-to-date creations to the slope, which must remain intact for at least one journey down the hill. The day is crowned with evening celebrations, including a non-serious appro-event featuring various activities, restaurants and student friendly bars.
    • Who organises? Oulun yliopiston koneinsinöörikilta (Guild of Mechanical Engineering)
    • What is best? The vibrant downhill attitude and wonderful Modified series creations!
  3. Fuksisuunnistus (Fuksi Orienteering)
    • When? In September, when the new Fuksi are strongest of all.
    • Who for? All Fuksi, with older students helping to run checkpoints.
    • What happens? In the event, Fuksi compete in small groups against each other in the noble sport of orienteering. The theme of the event changes each year, with the groups able to unleash their creativity to match with the year’s theme, the best of whom receive a prize. The checkpoints can be found not just in the Linnanmaa campus, but across Oulu, and older students take part in the running of them. While points are awarded, the main aim is to have fun with fellow Fuksi.
    • Who organises? OTY, guilds and other student associations
    • What is best? The energy and joy of Fuksi!

Teekkari Culture in Oulu

Wappu Traditions

In Oulu, the Teekkari Wappu usually begins well before Wappu Day itself. Every day has its own event filled special programme, with the Wesibussi rolling throughout Oulu each day being the biggest speciality of the Wappu time. Other traditional events include for example church boat rowing competitions, Wappu raves, sparkling wine matinees and the Fuksi competition, in which Fuksi with the most points compete for the uintijärjestys (“swimming order”). In addition to these, new events are being constantly developed, such as the popular Wappu Beer Pong.

Throughout Wappu, the student-run Wappu radio Rattoradio keeps Wappu spirits high and spreads the word and news of Wappu with a range of joyful and cheering programmes. The Oulu Wappu magazine is published annually by the Oulu Guild of Architecture, with the aim each year to surpass the previous year’s humour level and exceed the boundaries of good taste.

Teekkari Cap and Other Symbols

The shape of the Oulu Teekkari Cap is inspired by the neljän tuulen lakki (Four Winds Cap), a hat that forms a part of the traditional Sami dress. The Teekkari cap is designed to continue to one side, following the tassel cord and forming a droplet (tippa). Knots are tied into the tassel cord, to represent each time the wearer has survived an Oulu Teekkari Wappu, up to a maximum of four knots. Upon graduation, the knots are untied, and the cord is (attempted to be) straightened.

The lining of the Oulu Teekkari Cap is blue and white. The cockade uses the emblem of each Oulu guild, with the exception of the Chairperson of the Technical Students Association (OTY), who uses the symbol of the association. When in a guild or OTY board, the respective emblem is also worn on the droplet of the cap to mark the year’s duty.

The colours of the OTY ribbon (kuntanauha) are blue, white and red, in the order: blue-white-blue-red-red-blue-white-blue. The ribbon is sold by the kilometre. The OTY Chairperson uses a ribbon with these same colours, but on a much wider ribbon that also features a rosette. The ribbon of the student union OYY has three blue stripes with white stripes between them.
